uPVC windows are a popular alternative to timber windows and with good reason. Spray painting uPVC windows can work wonders in transforming your exterior. You can even create a professional-looking finish that will stand the test of time, with minimal cost and equipment.
uPVC wasn't originally designed to be painted, but with specific uPVC paint, it is definitely achievable. Some of the challenges you need to overcome when painting this material include:

If you want a smooth, professional finish for uPVC surfaces, spray painting will get you the best results. There will always be some brush marks when using a paintbrush, but spray paint will give you even coverage that looks straight from the factory. This is especially important for uPVC because it is designed to be smooth.
Using spray paint for your uPVC windows and doors is the quickest and most efficient method. You can cover a much larger area in a smaller amount of time, and you don't need any specialist expertise.
Because spray paint provides a thin, even coat, you will end up needing to use less paint for a great finish. Two coats are often enough for full coverage, and it will be consistent and smooth.
While spray paint is the best method for painting uPVC windows, there are some challenges you need to be aware of before you start.
Spray painting is a messier job than a paintbrush and roller. There will always be some overspray because of the paint being sprayed through the air. When you spray uPVC, you need to be careful to fully cover any areas that you don't want painted, including glass, timber, and other exterior features.
You will often need extra tools for spray painting, such as a spray gun. Our Pentura uPVC Paint is compatible with all spray guns, and we have a range of guns to choose from if you need to pick one up. If you don't want to invest in a gun, our uPVC paint also comes in an aerosol can that you can use without any specialist tools needed.

First, you will need to clean the window frames. You can either use a specialist uPVC cleaner or a mild detergent and degreaser. Any dirt or grime build-up will prevent the paint from sticking to the surface, so it is important to thoroughly clean.
Then, you should lightly sand the surface with fine grit sandpaper. Don't go too heavy. You are only looking to slightly rough up the surface to help the paint adhere. Make sure to wipe down all of the dust once you have finished sanding.
You will also need to cover any areas that you don't want to be painted. Use masking tape to cover glass, window seals, handles, and wall edges. For larger areas, use a dust cloth or plastic sheeting.
Our Pentura Exterior uPVC Window Paint is a complete paint that does not require priming, but you can choose to prime if you want to. Our Penture 2K Rapid Build Primer can be used with a spray gun or comes in an aerosol can. Priming will create more of a rough texture over the smooth uPVC and create a better surface for the paint to adhere to.
Try to choose a day with mild temperatures, low wind, low humidity, and no rain. Avoid painting in direct sunlight if you can help it.
Before spraying the window, it is a good idea to do a test spray on a piece of scrap cardboard so you can get a feel for the speed and spread of the spray, and make any adjustments to the nozzle as needed.
When applying the paint, hold the gun or can around 6-8 inches away from the window frame. Spray in light even coats, using a slow sweeping motion. Try not to stop moving while you are spraying as even a slight pause can cause too much paint to pool in one area.
Wait for the first coat to dry (our paint is dry to the touch within 15-20 minutes) and then apply a second coat. If you are going from a dark to a light colour, you may need three coats in total.
Leave the paint to fully dry and cure before using the windows. Our paint takes around 10 hours to fully dry, but dry times can be affected by both heat and humidity.
Once the paint is dry, you can remove all of the masking tape and plastic sheeting. Then step back to admire your handiwork and the brand-new appearance of your uPVC windows!
