Giving your kitchen a makeover doesn't require a complete overhaul. A simple cabinet repaint can breathe new life into the space, transforming it from tired to trendy. This guide will equip you with the knowledge and steps to tackle this project, whether you're a seasoned DIYer or a painting novice. We'll cover both traditional brushwork and the increasingly popular option of kitchen spray painting. 

Planning and Preparation  

Empty the cabinets and remove all shelves, drawers, and contents. Label them for easy reassembly later. 

Assemble Your Equipment  

Here's what you'll need: 

• Brush Painting - Dust sheets, masking tape, sand paper (various grades), sugar soap solution, paint brushes (variety of sizes), paint rollers (foam and/or microfibre), paint tray, our high-quality kitchen cabinet paint, paint stirrer, safety glasses, dust mask, gloves. 
• Spray Painting – As above, with the addition of a respirator, spray gun (consider renting a professional-grade one), and a compressor (if not using a pre-filled spray can). 

Cleaning 

Clean the cabinet doors and frames thoroughly with a sugar soap solution. This removes grease, grime, and dirt for optimal paint adhesion. Rinse well and allow to dry completely. 

Sanding 

Lightly sand the cabinet surfaces to create a good key for the paint. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth. 

Primer 

This step is optional, as our high-performance paint doesn’t require primer. However, for heavily lacquered or stained cabinets, you could consider using a primer specifically designed for kitchen cabinets. This additional step enhances paint adhesion and coverage. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times. 

Brush Painting 

This method offers precise control, making it ideal for detailed areas and intricate cabinet designs. 

• Apply light, even strokes in the direction of the wood grain. 
• Focus on edges and corners first, then tackle the flat surfaces. 
• Use a smaller brush for intricate details and a wider brush for larger areas. 
• Apply two coats for a smooth finish. Allow the first application to dry completely before applying the second coat. 

Spray Painting 

This method is faster and can achieve a smoother finish on flat surfaces, but requires more careful preparation to avoid overspray. 

• Work in a well-ventilated area with drop cloths covering everything you don't want painted. 
• Wear a respirator and safety glasses for protection. 
• Hold the spray gun at a consistent distance from the surface and use sweeping motions. 
• Apply multiple thin coats, allowing each to dry thoroughly before applying the next. 

The Finishing Touches 

• Carefully remove masking tape at a low angle to avoid peeling paint. 
• Reattach the hardware and admire your handiwork!
